Abe Frajndlich

New York City

Photographer Abe Frajndlich—who is world-renowned for his portraits of stars and celebrities—moved from Germany to New York in 1984 and has been fascinated by its radiance and constant change ever since. He describes the city as his muse and has repeatedly recorded it and its people in haunting photographs. This richly produced volume showcases a selection of highly personal images from Frajndlich’s oeuvre that are very different from the familiar New York of ubiquitous postcards and posters. The selection of images has been curated in collaboration with the photographer himself, and the works are taken from his own archive—many of them never published or seen before. The result is a multifaceted picture: the black-and-white photographs are sometimes perceptive, sometimes thoughtful, and sometimes witty or quirky—but they are always a declaration of true love for New York.
