Reviews

"Magnificently produced. . . .  A concise, readable, and valuable introductory essay by Christopher de Hamel elucidates the formation of collections of miniatures removed from the books in which they were created. Each catalogue entry is accompanied by full, compelling discussion of the page and the book from which it was taken, and the identification of its artist, as determined by comparison to other known works. Major artists such as Sano di Pietro, Pacino di Bonaguida, and Lippo Vanni are included. Many of the paintings have previously been known only through auction catalogues, so this lavishly illustrated book is a required resource for future scholarship, and is a joy to examine. . . . Summing up: Essential."
